Historical Information

Adopted 23 November 1984. The red-white-red horizontal stripes recall the second national flag of the kingdom of Tahiti which was used from 1829 to 1847. The same flag with the addition of a French Tricolore became the flag of the protectorate and was used until 1880. After World War II a version without the canton was in popular, but unofficial, use. In 1975, the authorities agreed to allow the use of the flag with a 1:2:1 ratio of stripes. To distinguish the flag of French Polynesia from that of Tahiti, the emblem was placed in the centre. Its main feature is a piragua, which is a status symbol as well as an indispensable boat used for fishing and transportation. Polynesian society is often compare to a piragua and the figures in the piragua stand for the five parts of French Polynesia: the Windward Islands, The Leeward Islands, The Tuamotu Archipelago, The Austral Islands and the Marquesas Islands. The golden yellow rays symbolize the sun and light, and the blue and white waves represent the riches of the Pacific on which the people have always relied for their livelihood.
