Historical Information

 Introduced 1 December 1958. The flag displays the colours of France (blue-white-red) combined with the pan-African colours (green-yellow-red) to show that Europeans and Africans should have respect and friendship for one another. Their common bond, their red blood, is represented by the vertical red stripe binding all the stripes together. The star symbolizes independence.
